The Sensational Barnes Brothers

The Sensational Barnes Brothers

About

The Sensational Barnes Brothers are a melting pot of the old and the new: brothers Chris and Courtney Barnes dive deep into their roots while drawing in a modern-day audience. PopMatters hears gospel soul "bridging the gap between, say, the Soul Stirrers and Stax." Family is at the heart of the music. Their mother, Deborah, sang as a Raelette behind Ray Charles, and the brothers grew up singing in the Barnes Family concerts with their parents. In 2015 the family released the album Family Tree before Chris and Courtney began performing as a duo. The brothers are featured on Don Bryant's Grammy-nominated album Don't Give Up on Love, appear on several tracks of XOPA by Latin Grammy-nominated Making Movies, and have recorded with Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys. They recorded their first album under Bible and Tire Recording Co./Fat Possum.

Press quotes

“The brothers run through a spectrum of moods and modes in their gospel soul, often bridging the gap between, say, the Soul Stirrers and Stax, all the while keeping a local flavor.”
PopMatters
“That balance of commercial optimism and preacherly purpose—one might say sacred and profane—is evident in the Barneses themselves.”
VICE
“The Sensational Barnes Brothers effectively capture the sound of Memphis during the heyday of Stax Records, the Bar-Kays, and Booker T. & the M.G.s., providing us with some sensational gospel soul.”
Black Grooves
“The Barnes Brothers sounds more like a gospel record that was made in the late '60s or early '70s. I just want to make gospel records that sound like those gospel records I like to find in junk stores or record stores.”
Bruce Watson (Guitarist of Big Country)
“The Barnes Brothers pair uplifting lyrics with emotional melodies that are altered each and every time they are sung.”
