Rosie Flores
About
Rosie Flores is a triple-threat Texas musician and 2024 NEA National Heritage Fellow who has navigated the male-centric worlds of rock and country music as a respected lead guitarist, singer, and songwriter. A daughter of San Antonio, she helped lay the foundation for the alt-country movement as a celebrated performer on the 1970s “cowpunk” circuit and with her 1987 debut solo album. Flores became the first Latina to crack Billboard’s country music chart. Over a five-decade career spanning rockabilly, country, Americana, and Tex-Mex, she has championed trailblazers like Wanda Jackson and Janis Martin, and won a 2007 Peabody Award for narrating NPR's Whole Lotta Shakin’. Her influence is recognized in the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s “Western Edge” exhibition. A spark plug live performer, she was honored with Rosie Flores Day by the city of Austin in 2006.
