Making Movies Share “Déjala” in Collaboration with Lilo Sanchez (of Señor Loop)

The second single from Making Movies’ forthcoming album Una Vida arrives September 18

KANSAS CITY, MO – Latin Grammy-nominated band Making Movies continue the journey toward their forthcoming album Una Vida with “Déjala,” a new single featuring Lilo Sánchez, vocalist and member of the legendary Panamanian band Señor Loop. The song arrives September 18.

Following the release of their Spanish-language reimagining of Kevin Morby’s “This Is a Photograph (bajo el sol de Panamá),” “Déjala” offers another glimpse into the expansive world of Una Vida – an album that explores the intersections of identity, memory, language, family, and culture.

“Déjala” unfolds with an eerily beautiful build, gradually drawing the listener deeper into the song before revealing its full emotional weight. The collaboration with Sanchez adds another dimension to the track, creating a powerful meeting of voices and perspectives that feels both intimate and cinematic.

“I had been reading my abuela Esther’s poetry and thinking about the depths of heartbreak she describes so vividly; and that was the seed,” says Enrique Chi, leader of Making Movies. “As I began to work on the song, I struggled a bit. I linked up with Steve Berlin in Austin and flushed out the arrangement. Although it sounded great with some reduction, it still wasn’t quite working. I felt like it needed a different voice to bring it to life. So I asked Lilo, and his voice and melody brought the song to life. Steve, Lilo and I linked up to lay down the final elements at Ice Cream Party studios in Portland.”

The accompanying performance video filmed back at Ice Cream Party studios features Steve Berlin, Lilo Sánchez and Chi reimagining the song. Special thanks to Isaac and Ryan at Ice Scream Party/Glacial Pace for letting us borrow the space.

For Making Movies, Una Vida is not simply a collection of songs—it is another chapter in an ongoing story about where we come from, where we belong, and the connections that carry us forward.

About Making Movies

Making Movies is the Latin Grammy–nominated group led by Enrique Chi — born in Santiago, Panamá, and raised in the American Midwest — forging a sound guided by tradition, yet unmistakably its own.

The band has been described by Rolling Stone as “an eclectic blend of rumbero percussion, delicate organs, and grungy fuzz,” while NPR calls the project “perhaps one of the most unique groups around today.”

Their sound is anchored in the rich rhythmic traditions of Panamá and delivered with the force of a psychedelic rock show. Chi weaves the mejorana, a traditional hand-made instrument rarely heard outside of Panamá, into each performance.

Making Movies’ is collaborative across genres, working with artists from Rubén Blades to Kevin Morby, and David Hidalgo (Los Lobos) to Hurray for the Riff Raff. Most notably, Steve Berlin (Los Lobos) has served as a guiding force for the band — functioning as a spiritual band member, producer, and mentor.

Making Movies Lanza “Déjala”, Una Colaboración Con Lilo Sanchez (de Señor Loop)

El segundo sencillo del próximo álbum de Making Movies llega el 18 de Septiembre

KANSAS CITY, MO – Making Movies, la banda nominada al Latin Grammy, continúa el camino hacia su próximo álbum, Una Vida, con “Déjala”, un nuevo sencillo que incluye la participación de Lilo Sánchez, vocalista e integrante de la legendaria banda panameña Señor Loop. La canción se estrena el 18 de Septiembre.

Tras el lanzamiento de su última versión en español -titulada “This Is a Photograph (bajo el sol de Panamá)” de Kevin Morby —, “Déjala” ofrece un nuevo vistazo al vasto universo de Una Vida, un álbum que explora el punto de encuentro entre identidad, memoria, idioma, familia y cultura.

“Déjala” se va desarrollando de una manera hermosa e inquietante, envolviendo gradualmente al oyente en la canción antes de revelar todo su peso emocional. La colaboración con Sanchez añade otra dimensión al tema, creando un poderoso encuentro de voces y perspectivas que resultan a la vez íntimas y con un toque cinematográfico.

“Leyendo la poesía de mi abuela Esther reflexione sobre la profundidad del desamor que ella describe con tanta viveza; ahí surgió la semilla”, cuenta Enrique Chi, líder de Making Movies. “Al empezar a trabajar en la canción, tuve algunas dificultades. Me reuní con Steve Berlin en Austin y terminamos de definir el arreglo. Aunque sonaba muy bien en una versión más sencilla, sentía que todavía le faltaba algo; necesitaba una voz distinta para cobrar vida. Así que recurrí a Lilo, y su voz y melodía hicieron que la canción despertara. Finalmente, Steve, Lilo y yo nos reunimos para grabar los últimos detalles en los estudios Ice Cream Party de Portland”.
