PANAMANIAN BAND MAKING MOVIES SHARES “XOPA”TITLE-TRACK FROM FORTHCOMING ALBUM OUT NEXT FRIDAY, JUNE 17 VIA COSMICA ARTISTS
"Making Movies are all about this intersection - making music that makes you move in both directions" - Remezcla
"an eclectic blend of rumbero percussions, delicate organs and grungy fuzz rock" - Rolling Stone
"Perhaps one of the most unique groups around today, Making Movies is sensual, smoky, and seductive. Distorted guitars are buried under their Latin groove, colliding beautifully and urgently" - NPR
New York, NY (June 8, 2022) - Today, Panamanian rock'n'roll band Making Movies shares their latest single and video “XOPA,” the title-track from their forthcoming album, due June 17 via Cosmica Artists - [Album Pre-Save].
The William J. Stribling directed video will be featured at the Dances With Films festival in Los Angeles this Friday, June 10 at 5pm. The fictional film conveys an overly-confident version of the band as they travel by private plane while on tour, when suddenly they’re cosmically punished for their hubris as the airplane goes down and crashes in the desert. But instead of burning with the wreckage, they rise from the ashes and live to tell the tale. Como ave de mal agüero, nunca morire. Viajero sin ruta o puerto nunca morire.
Alongside Making Movies, “XOPA” stars NYC Comedy Queen Tina Burner as the stewardess, Emmy-Award winning comedian/writer Rory Albanese as the pilot, and TikTok star and comedian David Abed as the co-pilot - watch/share via Youtube.
When discussing the lyrics, songwriter and lead singer Enrique Chi said, “I’m so proud of this song. It's the most complete representation of my identity and our identity as a band — it leaves nothing at the door. The song represents music’s magical ability to unlock ancestral secrets, and is a song that could only be made after a decade-long journey using music as the guide to the journey inward.”
The upcoming album, XOPA transcends sonic heydays, connects long-ago and geographically distant cultural histories and, in the process, delivers a sound that is undeniably future-forward. The 10-tracks embraces the in-between lows as much as one cherishes the highs that’s critical to self-acceptance, to a degree of openness that makes living worthwhile.
The first three singles “Calor,” “Sala De Los Pecadores,” and “Porcelina” perfectly exemplify the intersection of culture and art with the blend of Memphis soul and salsa sensibilities. Afropunk recently said, "Making Movies have been overdue for a breakout moment, but their new single ‘Sala De Los Pecadores’ may be what pushes them over the edge. The new cut seamlessly blends alt rock and cumbia with a video that skewers rock excess. It’s heavy, fun, and full of moments of sonic transcendence."
XOPA does more than challenge musical standards; it eschews them altogether to create a broader vision of what music can be. The album features additional performances by guitarist Marc Ribot on “La Primera Radio,” a vocal collaboration with Rubén Blades, Dolores Huerta, and David Hidalgo of Los Lobos on “Consejos,” violin and viola by Grammy-nominated musician and composer Jeremy Kittel, and more.
